How our speed test works

Our speed test runs entirely against our own server. Download, upload, ping and jitter are measured in your browser - no data is sent to third-party services. The download test uses a real static file, which is delivered by the web server at full speed. This keeps the measurement fair and the load on our server low.

  • Own server: The measurement goes to our server - the result shows exactly how fast your connection to us is.
  • Ping & jitter: 10 short requests determine latency and stability. A low jitter value means a stable connection - important for gaming and video calls.
  • Live measurement: During the test you see the speed in real time on the gauge and in the time course diagram.
  • Optional comparison: With three parallel connections you can see the difference to a single connection - the typical trick of large providers.

How our test differs from big providers (Ookla, Google)

Large providers such as Ookla Speedtest or Google measure against a worldwide network of servers and often use many parallel connections. They usually show a "best case" value. Our test is deliberately different - honest, small and private:

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • 100% privacy: No registration, no third-party servers, no advertising.
  • Realistic: A single connection measures what a normal browser session actually gets.
  • Transparent: The test runs against our own server and the result is immediately explainable.
  • Low data consumption: Ideal for mobile data plans.

Disadvantages

  • One server in Europe: You measure your connection to us - not a worldwide "best value".
  • High speeds: With more than ~200 Mbit/s a single connection can be the limiting factor.
  • Heavy use: Under strong simultaneous load (rate limit) results can be lower.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why does my result differ from Ookla or Google?

Big providers use many parallel connections and a worldwide server network. They usually show the best possible value. Our test uses a single connection against our server in Europe - that is more realistic for normal use, but shows a different value, especially at high speeds.

What is jitter?

Jitter is the fluctuation of the ping (latency) across several measurements. A low jitter (under 15 ms) means a stable connection - ideal for gaming and video calls. A high jitter value causes delays and interruptions even with a fast download speed.

Which server is measured against?

Against our own server, which is hosted in Europe. The result therefore shows how fast your connection to this server is. If you want to test other routes, use a provider like Ookla in addition - the comparison is often illuminating.

How much data does a test consume?

About 12 MB per standard test (10 MB download + 2 MB upload). With the optional multi-connection comparison it is about 6 MB more. To protect our server, one test per IP is allowed every 60 seconds and max. 300 MB per hour (about 25 tests).
